Competition promotes Henley gardens

HENLEY in Bloom wants more people to take part in its gardening competition.

The organisers of the annual Gardens of Henley contest are inviting residents to send in their entries before June 16.

This year’s theme is “pollinators” and there are three categories — front garden, back garden and community garden. The front garden category is further divided into patio, lawn/borders and baskets for those with smaller gardens.

Caroline Langler, a member of Henley in Bloom, who runs the competition, said: “We want to reward people who have spent time and effort on their gardens.

“We tend to get people who enter all the categories so we get a lot of entries but they are all from a few people. This year we would be delighted to hear from new people.”

The judges will include Mrs Langler, town councillor Kellie Hinton, who chairs Henley in Bloom, and David Eggleton, of the Gainsborough Residents’ Association.

They will visit front gardens during the week beginning July 7 and back and community gardens on Saturday, July 12. They will give special recognition to the gardeners’ own work, sustainability, composting and bio-diversity.

A prize-giving evening will be held on Wednesday, September 24, where the winners of each category will receive an award and certificate provided by competition sponsor Southern Plant and Tool Hire.

There will also be prizes for the best overall garden and the garden which best embraces the “pollinator” theme as well as certificates for the runners-up.

Cllr Hinton said: “We don’t do a nomination scheme so we suggest that anyone with a friend, relative or neighbour with a lovely garden encourages them to enter.

“A lot of people don’t think their garden is good enough but there are so many fantastic gardens out there. We also get a lot of people who think they can’t enter because they only have window boxes but we have a category dedicated to people like that.”

Application forms can be collected from Henley town hall. For more information, call Mrs Langler on (01491) 577567 or email cdlangler@tesco.net
