Ex-mechanic retires after 45 years at same car firm

A FORMER mechanic has retired from a car dealers in Sonning Common after 45 years.

Peter Wickham, 61, was a teenager when he first started helping out at the Vauxhall dealership in Peppard Road, doing cleaning and other odd jobs on Saturdays.

He joined the business after leaving school at 16 in 1969 and qualified as a mechanic after completing a four-year apprenticeship. Mr Wickham, of Reades Lanes, Sonning Common, worked as a mechanic until 15 years ago when he moved into customer services. He said: “I’ve seen a lot of changes over the years but the main one is the technology, going from basic cars in the Sixties to very hi-tech modern cars.

“Cars are so much more reliable now and don’t break down as much. In the Sixties, a lot of people could do their own DIY maintenance but now it’s all done by computers and you don’t lift a bonnet.”

Mr Wickham’s colleagues joined him for a retirement party at the New Inn in Kidmore End.
