Jazz concert raises £1k for music room

THE 57th annual Midnight Matinée charity concert in Henley has raised more than £1,000.

The event at the Kenton Theatre in New Street, hosted by the Rotary Club of Henley, featured jazz band EMC Jazz. The 12-strong group played a mixture of trad and Dixieland songs including All That Jazz and When The Saints Go Marching In.

The concert was in aid of a new £30,000 music and community building at Valley Road Primary School, which currently has no dedicated music space so pupils have to practise in corridors and the meeting room. The new building will also serve as a breakfast and after-school club.

Among those present at the concert were Henley Mayor-elect Martin Akehurst and his wife Glynis, Rotary club president Roger Sayer and his wife Lyn and Mary Selvester, who chairs the school’s governors. The concert was organised by Rotarians John Grout and Barry Prior.

Mr Grout said: “It was an excellent evening and the band were very lively. Everybody in the audience was stamping their feet and jiving along.”
