PEGGY LEONARD reckons she is the oldest pipe player in the country.
The 95-year-old, who lives in Hop Gardens, Henley, took up the Northumbrian pipes, a smaller version of bagpipes, after visiting Alnwick Fair 35 years ago.
She still plays every day in her living room and is part of a band.
“I must be the oldest pipe player in the country — I’ve certainly not heard of anyone older,” she says. “I fell in love with the Highland pipes when I was 11 and it has never left me. I just like the sound.Northumbrian pipes are much better to play indoors because they are quieter.
“I used to visit Scotland a lot with my husband Bill and we always loved the pipes. When we went to the fair in 1979 we saw these pipes and were both fascinated so we came back with a pair each.”
