Carnival comes to Valley Road

CHILDREN and parents soaked up the sun at a Henley School’s summer fair.

Valley Road primary chose a Brazilian theme for the event to celebrate the World Cup next month.

Mayor Martin Akehurst officially opened the event with his wife Glynnis, who used to be deputy headteacher at the school. He said: “We have had close ties with Valley Road for many years. I was chairman of the PTA and our daughters were pupils.”

Entertainment included games, tombolas, a toy stall, manicures, an inflatable slide, football shoot-outs, panning for gold, a lucky dip and face-painting. There was Brazilian carnival fancy dress, Samba dancing lessons, a barbecue and stalls selling cakes and sweets.

Headteacher Tim Coulson said: “It was great fun and we had lovely weather. There were lots of different things going on and lots of people giving up their time for the school.”

Siobhan Pratt, who chairs the school’s parent-teacher association, said: “The feedback has been very positive. People said how lovely it was and how happy all the kids were. Everybody had a great day.”

The proceeds will go towards a new £30,000 music room at the school. The building will be used for music and dance lessons and will house the school’s breakfast and after-school clubs.
