Community fund to close after 44 years

A COMMUNITY care fund in Sonning Common is to close after 44 years.

The Sonning Common and District Community Care Fund committee has announced it is to disband due to its aging membership.

The fund has been a major supporter of Sonning Common Health Centre in Wood Lane. It has also provided funds for many community groups, including the Village Gardeners and Sonning Common Lunch Club.

Secretary Joan Thorne, 77, said: “It is with much sadness and regret that the chairman and committee of the Sonning Common and District Community Care Fund have decided it is time to announce its closure after many happy years of fund-raising since 1970. All this has only been made possible by the generous support of our local community and we thank every one of you for your assistance over the years.”

Mrs Thorne, who has been secretary for 25 years since taking over from her mother Renee Pratt, said: “The fund has changed over the years as the health service has changed and I think it is not needed in the same way that it was.
