Long service award for ‘master’ woodsman

A WOODSMAN at the Hardwick Estate in Whitchurch has been honoured for his commitment.

Tim Sheldon was presented with a long service award by the Royal Forestry Society.

The 54-year-old, from Goring Heath, started work on the estate off Hardwick Road as a teenager in 1975. At the time, its 170 hectares of woodland were used to grow beech, ash and Douglas fir for timber.

Mr Sheldon’s duties expanded over time as he became responsible for conserving and managing the trees.

The site is now run sustainably, meaning the estate avoids felling any trees unless necessary.
