Derek Wood: surveyor, keen sportsman and family man
VETERAN local sportsman Derek Roger Wood has passed away, aged 70.
Derek was born in Burton-on-Trent on June 16, 1944, the youngest son of Frank and Kathleen (née Cooper) Wood.
His father was a cooper (barrel maker) by trade and his mother was secretary to Geoffrey Fisher, the headmaster of Repton School, who later became Archbishop of Canterbury.
Derek was born with whooping cough, contracted from his desperately ill mother, who passed away when he was only five months old.
In those days, Derek and his older brother Bernard and sister Judy would certainly have been put into care but Frank Wood’s older sister Norah (Higton) and her husband Ernest saved the day by bringing up the three children, firstly in Nottingham in 1945 and from 1947 in Henley, where they rejoined Frank who had moved down in 1946 to work for Brakspear’s brewery.
