Residents given peek at historic aircraft

RESIDENTS of Benson were treated to an unexpected fly-past by a Lancaster bomber.

The iconic Second World War aircraft, one of only two that are still airworthy, swooped over RAF Benson on Thursday last week on its way to the Bournemouth Air Festival.

Corp Neil Chapman, the base photographer, took a picture of the bomber in the distance with a Puma 2 helicopter in the foreground.

The Avro Lancaster is part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Last month the Henley Standard tlold how Harpsden businessman Matthew Munson helped fly the other Lancaster across the Atlantic from Canada to England. He bid £43,000 to win an online auction to be part of the eight-man crew on the three-day, 3,700-mile flight.
