Local gravedigger wins national award

JONNY YAXLEY, of the Henley Woodland Burial Ground in Rotherfield Greys, has been named gravedigger of the year 2014 in the Good Funeral Awards.

The awards are conferred by judges appointed by the Good Funeral Guide, a not-for-profit consumer advice and advocacy organisation.

Mr Yaxley has been digging graves for 15 years and Charles Cowling, director of the guide, said: “Jonny Yaxley is a special person whose charm and commitment to making sure that everything is beautifully prepared on the day has made him a formidable force for good.”

Bruce Jones, of Tomalin & Son, was nominated for green funeral director of the year.

Henley Woodland Burial Ground, which is operated by Leedam Natural Heritage, was named cemetery of the year last year.
