CLIFF LEE was born in Manchester and educated at North Manchester High School.
After leaving school in 1947, he joined the Air Ministry and worked in the field of meteorology for the RAF in Kent and Lincolnshire.
In 1948, he returned to Manchester and completed a degree in general science.
In 1953, he was called up for National Service in the Royal Corps of Signals and for the next two years was on active service in Egypt and Cyprus.
On returning to the UK, he joined a paper manufacturing company as an assistant chief scientist.
