RESIDENTS of South Oxfordshire owe £4.8million in unpaid council tax.

This is an increase of £200,000 on last year, according to figures published by the Department for Communities and Local Government.

On April 1, council tax bills in South Oxfordshire rose by 3.5 per cent with the average bill for a band D household amounting to £1640.13 for 2016/17, compared with £1584.63 for 2015/16.

National Debtline, a free advice service run by the Money Advice Trust, has warned that many residents are not receiving the free advice they need to deal with council tax and other debts.
