A DECISION on plans to cut subsidised travel for school pupils will be made next month.
Oxfordshire County Council, which is considering limiting free travel to a child’s nearest school, has said the cabinet will make a final decision at a special meeting on February 4 after a meeting of the council’s education scrutiny committee.
The council says its current provision is more generous than the national statutory level and its plans would save between £1 million and £2 million a year.
Any changes could apply to either all children starting school in September next year and then be extended to all children after two years or be phased in gradually to ensure all children currently in receipt of free transport continue to receive it until they leave primary or secondary school.
The council is also considering increasing concessionary fares for pupils and post-16 students who are not entitled to free travel on school buses.
