Residents prepare for anti-Tesco march

A PROTEST march against Tesco’s plans to open a branch in Goring will take place tomorrow (Saturday).

The event, organised by the Stop Tesco in Goring pressure group, will begin with a public meeting at the village hall at 2pm.

At 3.30pm, residents will march to the former Queen’s Arms pub in Reading Road, which Tesco plans to convert into an Express store.

There will then be displays and presentations in the village hall from 4pm. Tea and cakes will be served throughout.

Tesco bought the former Greene King pub last year and does not need planning permission for a change of use.

Stop Tesco in Goring believes the store would threaten the village’s independent traders. It has also raised safety concerns, saying the site is at a blind junction.

The group plans to start raising funds so that it can commission expert reports on the impact of Tesco’s proposal.
