Five candidates fight for seat

FIVE candidates are bidding to represent Watlington and Chalgrove on Oxfordshire County Council.

A by-election will be held on Thursday following the resignation of Caroline Newton, who has moved from Britwell Salome to Milan, where her husband has a new job.

Mrs Newton, a Conservative, was elected at a by-election following the death of Councillor Roger Belson in 2011. She then held the seat at council elections last year with 1,508 votes, a 58 per cent share of the total.

The by-election candidates represent the Conservatives, Labour, the Liberal Democrats, UKIP and the Green Party.

Stephen Harrod, 60, the Tory candidate, has lived in Great Milton with his wife Catherine for 12 years and has two grown-up children. He grew up in Africa but was born in Wendover and says he has always felt a great affinity for rural England.
