Villagers win fight against pub garden development

RESIDENTS have won a fight to stop a five-bedroom home being built in the grounds of their village pub.

Brakspear has been denied planning permission for the development at the Sun Inn in Whitchurch Hill.

The pub company sold the business to 70-year-old businessman Richard Hazell last year but kept the beer garden and play area in the hope of building the two-storey house.

Mr Hazell, the owner of tarmac contractors Hazell and Jefferies, also bought more than an acre of land behind the pub where he pledged to create a new beer garden.

South Oxfordshire District Council’s planning committee turned down Brakspear’s scheme, saying it would threaten the pub’s viability and the new property would spoil the rural character of the area.
