Conservatives hold Watlington and Chalgrove

THE Conservatives held the Watlington and Chalgrove seat on Oxfordshire County Council in a by-election yesterday.

Stephen Harrod was elected with 871 votes, followed by Liberal Democrat candidate Susan Cooper with 629 votes, UKIP’s Gavin Laird Craig (311) Paul Collins of Labour (159) and the Green Party’s Colin Tudge (116).

The by-election was held following the resignation of Caroline Newton, who has moved from Britwell Salome to Milan, where her husband has a new job.

Mrs Newton, a Conservative, was elected at a by-election following the death of Councillor Roger Belson in 2011. She then held the seat at council elections last year with 1,508 votes, a 58 per cent share of the total.

Mr Harrod, 60, has lived in Great Milton with his wife Catherine for 12 years and has two grown-up children. He grew up in Africa but was born in Wendover and says he has always felt a great affinity for rural England.
