Plan to turn office block into gated development

COUNCILLORS in Wargrave have opposed plans to create a gated community.

Wentworth House Ltd has applied for permission to enlarge Wentworth House, an office block in Blakes Road, in order to turn it into seven new homes.

The development would require a gate at the entrance as well as changes to the car park and some landscaping.

Wargrave Parish Couuncil has recommended that the application is refused, saying the project would be “incompatible with the aims of community cohesion”. Members were concerned that the houses on the 15-hectare site would be isolated from the rest of the village and the position of the gates could cause obstructions in Blakes Road.

They also felt the development was too big for the greenbelt and the loss of commercial space would be detrimental to the area. Last year, Wokingham Borough Council granted planning permission to convert the block into four two-storey houses.
