£2,000 deckchairs earn only £49

DECKCHAIRS bought by Henley Town Council to rent out in Mill Meadows made just £49 last year.

The council spent £2,000 on the 50 green and white chairs in February last year and had hoped to make the money back in the first year.

However, the chairs were rented out only a handful of times.

Town clerk Mike Kennedy has admitted the council may have to look at other ways to make them profitable.

He said: “We took very little money from the deckchairs last year. People just didn’t want to collect them from the kiosk and return them afterwards. However, we did use the deckchairs at no cost for the Music on the Meadows event, which was attended by more than 2,000 people.”
