Council won’t buy centre

HENLEY Town Council has ruled out trying to buy the town’s youth centre.

Councillors discussed the issue in private on Tuesday following a decision by the trustees of the Deanfield Avenue centre to close it.

The Thamesfield Youth Association says it can longer afford the £45,000-a-year running costs and will sell the site.

Town clerk Mike Kennedy said councillors considered using powers introduced under the Localism Act to bid for the centre as a community asset but decided against.

The council has given the centre £10,000 a year since Oxfordshire County Council decided in 2011 to withdraw an annual grant of £25,000.
