Loan boosts skate park construction

THE construction of a skate park in Sonning Common is set to begin thanks to a £15,000 loan.

Sonning Common Parish Council has agreed to provide the final sum needed to build the £100,000 facility at Bishopswood sports ground.

The village’s skate park committee will then continue to fund-raise in order to repay the loan.

The committee is waiting for Rotherfield United Football Club to sign paperwork which will hand over the ownership of part of its ground to the parish council.

Councillor Carole Lewis, who chairs the committee, said: “We would like to get the construction started as soon as possible.

“We want to make use of the better, dry weather because if we get into the winter season with lots of rain it will cost a lot to put tracking down to get equipment in.”

The 45m x 30m skate park will be built in the south-east corner of the sports ground by Bristol company Wheelscape.

Most of the funding was raised with two large grants. Larfarge Tarmac donated £60,000, some of which will go towards improving the play area in Baskerville Road, while £15,000 was given by South Oxfordshire District Council.
