Church accused of greed over demolition of old hall

A CHURCH has been accused of greed over plans to demolish its hall in Watlington.

The hall, which is out of use because the roof is in a dangerous condition, would be demolished and replaced by a five-bedroom house and a new rectory for St Leonard’s Church in Pyrton Lane.

The house and the existing rectory in Hill Road on the other side of the town would be sold to pay for a £150,000 extension to the church.

Some residents have criticised the planning application submitted to South Oxfordshire District Council in August.

Others have welcomed the move, which the rector of Watlington says is vital to ensure the sustainability of the church.
