Toll set to rise 50 per cent

THE cost of crossing Whitchurch toll bridge is set to increase from 40p to 60p.

The Whitchurch Bridge Company has confirmed that it will apply to the Government for permission to raise the toll.

The company has just finished refurbishing the bridge. The project began in October last year and was supposed to finish in April but was delayed by five months. The work cost almost £2 million more than the original £4 million estimate.

Oxfordshore County councillor David Nimmo Smith claimed a 50 per cent rise would reduce the traffic and the income.

“The bridge is a valuable road link and people should be encouraged to use it, not penalised,” he said.
