Council refuses to dredge river

DREDGING the River Thames around Marsh Lock should be down to the Environment Agency, according to Henley councillors.

Members of the town council’s finance strategy and management committee rejected a proposal to set aside up to £15,000 to dredge the river at the lock off Mill Lane.

Earlier this year, building work at the nearby weir caused an island to form from sediment in a section of the river.

Councillor Kellie Hinton said it shouldn’t be down to the council to pay for clearing the sediment.

She said: “It’s not our responsibility, it’s for the Environment Agency. If we dredged it, it would just come back and need dredging again regularly. I don’t see it as urgent or dangerous.”
