Recycling of trees delayed

CHRISTMAS trees were left to pile up in the car park at Mapledurham Pavilion in Caversham as Reading Borough Council’s recycling service struggled to cope.

Conservative councillor Isobel Ballsdon claimed she had been told by a council official that its annual tree chipping service had been axed, causing “chaos”.

In fact, staff were overwhelmed by the huge number of trees left at collection points across the town, including the pavilion.

A council spokesman said: “Recycling commences immediately after the first weekend of the New Year when trees really start to be taken down and we expect to carry on with this for about two weeks.

“With such a large number of trees being discarded over this first weekend, it always takes a few days to catch up.”
