Sounds familiar

THE Conservatives’ unsuccessful nomination of Lorraine Hillier to be the next mayor at last week’s meeting of Henley Town Council

THE Conservatives’ unsuccessful nomination of Lorraine Hillier to be the next mayor at last week’s meeting of Henley Town Council had an air of familiarity about it.

It was the second year running that the long- serving member had been put forward for the role and, sadly for the Tories, with the same result.

But there was something familiar about Councillor Sam Evans’ nomination speech too — word for word, it was almost identical to last year’s.

Cllr Evans tells me: “You’re the only one who noticed but I did tweak a few things,” before adding that last year town clerk Mike Kennedy had told her it was the best mayoral nomination speech that he had heard.

“You can’t improve on perfection,” she joked.
