IT was only after months of on-off debate that Henley Town Council agreed to accept a gift of a life-size statue of a mermaid.

The 370lb statue, or ama, is being designed by French artist Amaryllis Bataille and is to be placed on Red Lion Lawn.

Now, according to the town’s new mayor, a group of councillors has been formed to ensure the mermaid remains in good condition.

Stefan Gawrysiak says the trio of Will Hamilton, Dieter Hinke and Martin Akehurst will be known as the Brass Rubbing Association, or BRA for short.

“They will shortly meet on Red Lion Lawn and decide which bits of the voluptuous mermaid to polish,” he added.

I think Stefan’s year in office might be quite fun.
