A CAFE in Henley wants to add a box-style awning to its shop front. Patisserie Valerie, in Market Place, had an application for the roller blind recommended for approval by Henley Town Council’s planning committee.

Councillor Lorraine Hillier, who runs the Hot Gossip coffee house in Friday Street, said the blind would shade the contents of the shop window from the sun.

She said: “When it opened there was this amazing cake but it went like the Leaning Tower of Pisa because the sun was shining on it. I know the district council don’t like the blinds but traditionally they were around the town. It’s something we should encourage because they do look attractive.”

Councillor Laila Meachin opposed the plan, saying the blind extended too far out from the shop. She added: “It’s got dark brown fabric and I don’t think that adds to the conservation area — I don’t think it’s appropriate at all.”

South Oxfordshire District Council will make the final decision.
