Anger at £2,700 bill to fix bench

COUNCILLORS have criticised the cost of refurbishing a bench.

COUNCILLORS have criticised the cost of refurbishing a bench.

Henley Town Council spent £2,700 on the work on the large bench at Red Lion Lawn.

Speaking at this week’s meeting of the council’s finance management and strategy, Councillor Jeni Wood said: “I would have expected two benches for that — it is a huge amount of money.”

Councillor Lorraine Hillier added: “That seems an incredible amount of money. I remember coming to this council and it rejecting the replacement of a bench that someone had bought for their late wife because it had been vandalised.

“You could have replaced a dozen of those benches for that price and I think it is really wrong that this council could spend that money and would deny a member of the public a replacement bench that had been installed as a memorial.

Town clerk Mike Kennedy said: “This is a large character bench and when we have restored similar benches the price has been in that order.

“It is a specialist piece of work and we have spent this money with council approval.”
