Demolition of Sixties flats set to begin

THE redevelopment of Icknield Place in Goring is about to start.

THE redevelopment of Icknield Place in Goring is about to start.

Housing association Soha, which owns 27 flats in the cul-de-sac off Icknield Road, will begin demolishing them by the end of this month.

It is to replace them with a three-storey block containing 40 sheltered apartments for the elderly and associated communal facilities.

The development was approved last year despite opposition from the parish council and neighbours who argued the building would be imposing and overlook their homes.

They also claimed it was out of keeping with the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Soha argued the development was necessary to meet growing demand and that the flats, which were built in the Sixties, needed upgrading to meet modern standards.

The construction work will be carried out by Leadbitter Construction, of Abingdon, and is expected to be finished in September next year.
