MP unveils new sports pitches for Wargrave

HOME Secretary Theresa May officially opened new pitches in Wargrave on Saturday.

The Maidenhead MP, who is president of Wargrave Girls FC, unveiled a full-sized 11-a-side pitch and two smaller junior pitches at Kings Field.

The pitches will be used by both the girls and the Wargrave Wolves boys? team.

Mrs May, who wore the personalised Wargrave Girls shirt she was given on a visit in 2010, attended with her husband, Philip, and joined families to watch the inaugural match between the coaches of the Wolves and Wargrave Girls, which ended 4-4.

Mrs May, who is president of the girls? club, said: ?It is great to see this new facility. The football club has been so successful over the years and to encourage so many youngsters to get involved in sport is a very good thing.

?Hopefully, some of these girls will become real sporting names in the future.?

Club chairman Bob Austen said: ?The club is going from strength to strength. About 130 girls in the village play for the club and the number is increasing.?

He thanked officials and coaches of both clubs, saying: ?These men and women are the backbone of our clubs, who give their spare time so willingly. The community is very lucky to have such determined and committed individuals.?

The celebration day also included a children?s penalty shoot-out in which ?Inter Milan? defeated ?Juventus? 8-5 and there was a licensed bar and a barbecue.
