Permission granted

A TOWN councillor has been given planning permission to open a tea shop.

A TOWN councillor has been given planning permission to open a tea shop.

Lorraine Hillier will be allowed to serve “light refreshments” at Upstairs Downstairs, which will open in the former Askew Art premises in Duke Street later this month.

Miss Hillier already owns the Hot Gossip coffee house in Friday Street.

Her application to South Oxfordshire District Council was approved after being supported by the town council, the Henley Society and the district council’s officers. Adrian Duffield, head of planning, said: “The application is in accordance with relevant development plan policies and national planning policy as it is considered that, subject to conditions, the proposal would be in keeping with the character and appearance of the site and surrounding area and would not harm the neighbouring amenity.”

Miss Hillier will sell about 45 types of tea from in the downstairs retail space while upstairs customers will be able to sit down for a cup of tea and a snack.

The tea shop will be able to open from 7am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday and from 9am to 5pm on Sundays and bank holidays.
