Street light on offer

A DISUSED street light in Wargrave could be sold to a group of residents.

A DISUSED street light in Wargrave could be sold to a group of residents.

The lamp-post in Hill Lands is disconnected, so Hill Lands, a company made up of homeowners on the estate, has asked Wargrave Parish Council to pay to have it reconnected.

The council has replied that lighting that area is not its responsibility and instead offered to transfer ownership of the lamp-post to the residents for a nominal fee.

Chairman Dick Bush said: “A previous council put the light in but it has been disconnected for 10 or 15 years. It would be nice to get the ownership issue tied up because if the lamp did fall over somebody would be liable.”

Mr Bush said an agreement for the company to purchase the light had been drawn up in the late Nineties but it fell through at the last moment.

He added: “It all went swimmingly until we were about to hand the light over and all of a sudden they went quiet. After that we made sure the light was disconnected.”

Hill Lands declined to comment.
