£130,000 of new equipment at council gym

THE gym at Henley leisure centre has re-opened after refurbishment.

The Gillotts Lane centre has been re-decorated and fitted with £130,000 worth of new equipment, including treadmills, recline bikes and cross-trainers.

Technogym machines feature a digital platform that allows users to use the internet while working out. The equipment can even display simulations, such as country lanes.

Ann Midwinter, who chairs South Oxfordshire District Council, officially re-opened the gym at a ribbon-cutting ceremony and was given a tour.

She said: “The people of Henley are very lucky to have this sort of equipment. It is so modern and I’m very impressed with the technology.”

The leisure centre is run by a non-profit organisation called GLL on behalf of South Oxfordshire District Council.

The council has also formed a partnership with Better, the UK’s largest leisure provider, to improve leisure facilities across the district. Mark Sesnan, managing director at Better, said: “As an organisation that reinvests any financial surplus in the service, these developments will see the community benefit with access to top class, affordable facilities, which we hope will help get more people more active more often.”

Bill Service, cabinet member for leisure, said: “We look forward to customers at Henley benefiting from this new equipment, the first in the district under the new leisure contract with Better.”
