Makeover plan for butcher’s

THE butcher’s shop in Watlington is set to have a new look.

THE butcher’s shop in Watlington is set to have a new look.

Tom Calnan, who runs Calnan Brothers in High Street, has submitted an application to revamp the interior of the Grade II listed shop.

He said, “The materials inside the shop are dated and not up to health and safety and hygiene standards.

“I wish to update the modern meat counters as they are not that energy efficient.

“I wish to relay the floor as it is worn and cracked in places. I plan do this with an old-fashioned wooden floor to fit in with the building.

“I think this is a great opportunity to put the life back into the building.”

Mr Calnan also wants to tile the walls, saying this would improve hygiene, remove an inner wall and install a meat-ageing cabinet.

He said, “This will bring back the old feeling of a butcher’s shop as meat used to be hung and displayed in front of the customer.

“The only difference is our ageing cabinet will be enclosed and refrigerated.

“However, to do this we need to knock into a storage room by 0.5m.

“By doing this it will benefit the shop and also the town as this ageing cabinet will be the only one in Oxfordshire and will bring more people into the town, contributing to the local economy.”
