AN alleyway between two shops in Henley has been labelled ?disgusting?.

Derek Whittingham, of New Street, complained about the condition of the passage between Sainsbury?s and Boots in Bell Street at a town council meeting.

He said it was regularly covered with litter and cigarette butts.

Mr Whittingham said: ?I would like to put on record that we have the most disgusting alleyway in the town between two major stores ? Sainsbury?s and Boots.

?I think you will understand this is absolutely disgusting and that?s why I have to take it up with you.?

Simon Smith, who works in the Sainsbury?s store, replied from the public gallery.

?That alleyway is nothing to do with Sainsbury?s,? he said. ?We are not responsible, it is the responsibility of a private owner. It is private property and we have no contract to go down there.?

But Councillor Elizabeth Hodgkin urged one of the retailers to do something about it She said: ?Someone needs to take responsibility. Both of those stores? managers should be dealing with it.

?This alleyway has quite a history. It is bad and it is in the middle of Henley. Perhaps we could find out whose responsibility it is.?

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Hodgkin said that many residents had complained about the alleyway over the years.

She said: ?People have grown so frustrated with it over the years. Boots used to clean it but then they stopped.

?If it was cleaned regularly it wouldn?t get so bad.?

The alleyway is believed to have been owned by London and Henley Properties, which went into administration just before Christmas.

It has been cleaned since the council meeting.
