DOZENS of homes in Caversham were left in the dark for several hours after a power cut

DOZENS of homes in Caversham were left in the dark for several hours after a power cut.

The supply went down in Hemdean Road shortly before 5pm on Monday.

About 21 properties were affected in the first hour and another 41 in the next hour.

The affected homes were between Hemdean Hill and the mini-roundabout at the junction with Rotherfield Way.

The street lights were also out during this time, leaving the area very dark after sunset.

Power company SSE set up a ?welfare van? in Queen Street, which was also affected.

Residents were given hot drinks and could charge their mobile phones from a portable power supply.

Contractors dug up a section of Hemdean Road in order to carry out repairs and the the electricity was restored at 11.20pm.

An SSE spokeswoman said the problem was caused by faulty underground equipment.

She said: ?We would like to apologise to residents for the inconvenience and to thank them for their patience while we resolved the problem.?
