HENLEY Mayor Martin Akehurst is among the seven candidates running for two seats on the Sonning

HENLEY Mayor Martin Akehurst is among the seven candidates running for two seats on the Sonning Common ward of South Oxfordshire District Council.

He is one of two Conservative candidates with the other being Paul Harrison, who hopes to be elected for a fourth consecutive term.

Cllr Akehurst said: “We were considered an ideal match for the seat because of our experience on planning, an important issue in Sonning Common.” Councillor Alan Rooke is standing down after eight years representing the Conservatives.

Husband and wife Andy and Jill Davies are contesting the seats for the Liberal Democrats. Mrs Davies is a former county councillor for Sonning Common while Mr Davies is a former chairman of Rotherfield United FC.

The Greens’ candidate is former Wallingford town councillor Alison Smart. David Winchester, a former chairman of governors at Chiltern Edge School, and Chris Wright will contest the seat for Labour.
