A TASTER day aimed at people interested in becoming an on-call firefighter will be held at Goring fire station on June 13.

Visitors will be given a talk about the job and a tour of the station and have a chance to try cutting equipment, breathing apparatus and water rescue equipment.

A spokesman for Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Anyone is welcome to come along. We have recruited all kinds of people, from professionals to mums. They tend to be people who want to give something back to their communities.”

To become an on-call firefighter you must live or work within five minutes of your local fire station and you will have to pass a series of selection tests.

Those selected will be paid a standby rate for being available when they are on call plus an hourly rate for attending incidents, training and other duties.
