Chairwoman’s chilly invite to absent councillors

PAT PEERS returned to a familiar subject at her first meeting as the new chairman of Benson Parish Council last week.

She took a swipe at Felix Bloomfield and Richard Pullen, the village’s representatives on South Oxfordshire District Council, only days after they had been elected.

In December 2012, Councillor Peers said it was “disgusting” that Councillor Bloomfield and Councillor Pullen’s predecessor Rachel Wallis had only attended two parish council meetings since the local elections in May that year.

“Our previous district councillor used to come to every meeting,” she added.

Cllr Wallis was later thrown out of office for failing to attend any district council meetings for six months which she blamed on pressure of work and being a single mother. Speaking at last week’s meeting, Cllr Peers said there was no need to ask if the parish council had received reports from its district council representatives, adding: “The reason I just made that comment is because we never see them.”

The council agreed to invite the pair to their next meeting but Cllr Peers added: “We’ll see what happens — don’t hold your breath.”

It’s not exactly the warmest of welcomes!
