Free wifi service goes live

FREE wireless internet access is now available in Henley town centre.

FREE wireless internet access is now available in Henley town centre.

Transmitters have been installed at the town hall and at the corner of Duke Street and Market Place which cover nearby streets.

Users can search for the service on their phone, tablet or laptop and connect after filling in a short form which they will have to submit only once. Access is filtered to block inappropriate websites.

The £10,000 initiative, which is funded equally by the town council and South Oxfordshire District Council, covers Market Place and parts of the neighbouring streets.

Town centre manager Peter McConnell, who leaves the role this month, said: “One of my objectives was to offer our many thousands of visitors more accessible information about Henley so they spend more time and money in its businesses.

“I’m pleased that both the town and district council have been supportive. It has been quite a technical challenge but we’ve finally achieved something which will benefit residents, businesses and visitors.

“Henley is a beautiful old town but also needs to be a 21st-century town offering facilities that modern visitors expect. Only a few towns in our region offer free wifi so it gives us a competitive edge.”
