Parish to host more community events

MORE community events could be held on Whitchurch village green following a meeting to discuss future use of the land.

A parish council working group has proposed setting up a new committee that would organise activities on the site.

These could include rounders games, film nights, music concerts, barbecues and other social occasions.

Some of these could have a fund—raising element to help pay for the refurbishment of the village’s cricket pavilion.

Councillor David Bowen owns a “gunge tank” hire business and one of these could be set up at Whitchurch fete on August 29 to raise extra cash for the project.

The working group, which was set up last month, is still considering charging sports clubs to use the green but no decision has been made.

It says this is “not seen as a critical issue” now a decision has been taken not to charge Whitchurch Primary School. It is also discussing new facilities for teenagers, which could include a basketball net, and repairing the ground by the football goals.

Anyone with ideas for improving the site can contact Councillor Jim Donahue, the group chairman, on 0118 984 1182 or email him at jimdonahue7@gmail.com
