THE cost of crossing Whitchurch Bridge is to increase by 20p on August 12.
The Whitchurch Bridge Company has been granted permission to raise the basic cash toll for cars from 40p to 60p.
It follows a public inquiry which took place before a Government transport inspector in Pangbourne two months ago.
The company says the increase is needed to repay the loan it took out to refurbish the bridge, which began in 2013 and went more than £2million over budget.
More than 1,000 people signed a petition against the proposal, saying the company should repay the debt over a longer period.
The £3 toll for larger vehicles will also increase to £4 while the cost of crossing on a pre-paid discount card will increase to 40p.
A full report will appear in this week's Henley Standard.
