Return of road repairs with more to come

RESURFACING work on a potholed road in Sonning Common was taking place this week.

RESURFACING work on a potholed road in Sonning Common was taking place this week.

Workmen returned to Kennylands Road to patch 69 potholes and cracks in the road that were not repaired during a week’s work last month.

It follows a complaint by parish councillor Dirk Jones about the standard of the previous repairs. The latest work was expected to be finished today (Friday) but Councillor Jones believes there will still be problems with the road.

He said: “On parts of that road the underlying base is broken. It needs to be sorted and the whole thing has to be restructured underneath to do that. Once that is done you can Tarmac over it.”

David Bartholomew, the village’s representative on Oxfordshire County Council, the highways authority, said surface dressing would take place next year.

This is when a layer of chippings is placed on the road over a layer of tar. Councillor Bartholomew said: “Extensive patching work has taken place on that road but there have been some complaints about the patchwork effect. The repairs have to be given some months to harden off. Surface dressing will take place early next year and that will improve the overall ride of the road and conceal the patchwork effect.”
