£500 for car park makeover

HENLEY in Bloom could put £500 towards cleaning up King’s Road car park.

HENLEY in Bloom could put £500 towards cleaning up King’s Road car park.

The committee wants to put the money raised by sales of the Blooming Marvellous beer made by Brakspear, whose head office backs on to the car park.

The golden ale was brewed at the company’s microbrewery at the Bull in Bell Street and sold at its 11 Henley pubs during June. Twenty pence from each pint sold was donated to Henley in Bloom.

Work on the car park would include planting up the shrub beds and tidying up the recycling area.

The project is part of the “greener streets, better lives” campaign run by the Royal Horticultural Society.

The money for the project was approved at a Henley in Bloom committee meeting on Wednesday but more funding may be needed.

Vice-chairwoman Kellie Hinton suggested other businesses which back on to the car park might want to  contribute.

She said: “It will take a couple of years to get it up to standard, which ties in with the three-year campaign.”

The committee also agreed to give up to £400 to the Gardening Buddies for new bulbs (£200), edging strips for a bed in Reading Road (£150) and two new planter barrels (£50) to replace the two in Greys Road by Gillotts field.

Cllr Hinton said: “The Gardening Buddies do a huge amount of work for the town and the least we can do is pay for bulbs.”
