Fee to use green idea returns

A CONSULTATION has been launched on the idea of charging for the use of Whitchurch village green.

A CONSULTATION has been launched on the idea of charging for the use of Whitchurch village green.

Sports clubs can currently use the site for free but the parish council is considering introducing a fee.

The council says the land, which the Whitelock family gave to the village in 2012, costs about £2,700 a year to maintain.

It may be able to continue paying this but wants to know what residents think.

The council has proposed two options.

The first is introducing an annual charge for community groups to hold matches and fixtures on the green. The village school would be exempt.

Before the elections in May, the previous council announced a similar scheme but backed down following opposition.

The second option is to continue allowing free use of the land as long as the annual upkeep doesn’t exceed 10 per cent of the council’s budget.

The consultation also asks people which activities they take part in on the green and what facilities they would like to see in future.
