Hall plan vote delay

PLANS to demolish Watlington church hall and build two new homes are set to be decided upon in the new year.

The scheme has been delayed for months due to changes to the proposals.

St Leonard’s Church wants to replace the hall in Pyrton Lane with a five-bedroom house and new rectory. The new house and existing rectory in Hill Road would then be sold to pay for an extension to the church.

A decision was due to be made by South Oxfordshire District Council in May but discussions with the Diocese of Oxford are still ongoing.

In the amended plans the car park was repositioned but Watlington Parish Council’s planning committee has objected, saying the space seems “insufficient” for the needs of the church, especially for weddings and funerals.

It also claimed the houses would be too large for the site and the development would result in the loss of an important open space.

The church says the sustainability of St Leonard’s relies on the development as it costs £1,200 a week to keep the Grade II listed building open.
