Appeal to save children”s centre

BENSON Parish Council could be asked for up to £4,000 to help keep the children’s centre in Wallingford open.

BENSON Parish Council could be asked for up to £4,000 to help keep the children’s centre in Wallingford open.

County councillor Mark Gray has made the suggestion after Oxfordshire County Council unveiled plans to save £8million by replacing its 44 centres and seven early intervention hubs with eight children’s and family centres.

He said: “I’m working across the county with a number of children’s centres. I can see how useful they are in supporting parents with very early years children. I’m looking at what may happen if the funding goes. One source of funding is from parish councils. I’m going to float the idea that Benson Parish Council would make a grant. It would need to be ongoing.”

Cllr Gray said the Wallingford centre did outreach work at Benson parish hall once a week.

“I think it’s a very valuable service,” he said. “The writing isn’t on the wall for them. They can continue in maybe a slimmed down version.”
