Post office could re-open at shop

A VOTE is to be held on whether to move Brightwell-cum-Sotwell’s post office into the village’s community shop.

A VOTE is to be held on whether to move Brightwell-cum-Sotwell’s post office into the village’s community shop.

The existing post office in the Stewart Room at the village hall is to close and the Village Stores in West End has been offered a contract to run a post office counter.

The shop is funded by and mostly run by volunteers, all of whom will be entitled to vote on the move.

In a statement on its website, the Village Stores said: “No decisions have yet been made about the future of a post office.

“The Village Stores has been offered a contract to run a post office local counter within the shop but, as well as benefits, there are many challenges in accepting this contract, including staffing.’

Chairwoman Celia Collett said: “The shop management committee would like to remind all villagers that they can have a vote if they are members of the village community shop.

“The shop is run for community benefit and whichever way the vote goes we want to ensure that as many members as possible are involved in ensuring the shop has a sustainable future for all of us to enjoy.’

To become a member of the community shop costs £1.
