Flooding caused by old leaves

RESIDENTS have complained about blocked drains in Sonning Common.

RESIDENTS have complained about blocked drains in Sonning Common.

Pauline Whitehead raised the issue of flooding in Wood Lane, where she lives, at a parish council meeting on Monday.

She said: “The drains seem to be very blocked. Has anyone contacted Oxfordshire County Council about doing anything about clearing the drains? There is also a lot of leaf debris on the road. One drain is completely full of leaves.”

David Bartholomew, who represents the village on the county council, said a number of villagers had contacted him about the problem but that the responsibility was with South Oxfordshire District Council as leaf debris counted as litter.

He said: “It needs to be reported on Fix My Street. Hopefully you and other residents can report it and if it is not dealt with in a reasonable time I will escalate it.

“I can’t escalate it unless it has been reported. Once it has been reported, particularly by several people, it adds weight and evidence.”

Parish clerk Philip Collings said he would be happy to report the problem on parishioners’ behalf.

Council chairman Douglas Kedge said: “It will be dealt with. If you and your neighbours put in your contributions there will be some action. If not, the county councillor will take it up.”
